Day 1 – Introduction to Reporting Writing in Dynamics 365

Audience

This course is intended for users with an enhanced skill-set in handling data and analysis particularly for reporting such as business analysts, data analysts, support staff, researchers, programmers, report writers and database analysts. Students will gain a knowledge of the possible ways to report on Data as Super users, support staff, administrators, report writers and developers. Any individual intending to facilitate these or similar roles is suitable for the course.

Course Description

This course looks at the fundamentals of reporting in Microsoft Dynamics 365. Starting with the available and configurable tools in the system then progressing to the custom Report Builder tool. Students will gain a well-rounded knowledge of the capabilities available for reporting in Microsoft Dynamics 365. Labs, exercises and courseware are all tailored for the public sector domain using a variant of a case management system to handle complaints. This course always precedes the 2 day Advanced Report development course but can be taken in isolation for non-developers, or those who do not need to write advanced reports.

Course Pre-requisites

This course assumes students have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 from an end-user perspective. We recommend our 0100 series courses before attending this course if your knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 is limited (e.g. 0101, 0102 etc…).

Course Objectives

After completing this course, students will:

  • Will have hands-on experience with writing and editing basic reports in Reports Wizard and Report Builder

Course Modules:

Module 1:       Introduction to Reporting in Dynamics 365

The philosophy and design behind Microsoft Dynamics’ reporting structured is introduced and reinforced with a few exercises to acclimatize new users to the Dynamics environment from a reporting/analytical perspective.

Module 2:      Dynamics Native Reporting Tools

This module looks at the out of the box reporting tools available to basic and/or super users of the system. Exercises are focused on the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When and Why) of each tool and how to use them appropriately to get useful information out of the system.

Module 3:      Editing and Deploying Reports created with Report Wizard

Deploying reports from previous or existing systems can be a great advantage for new users who need to grasp an understanding of how a Dynamics solution has been setup and how the data might matter to it users. This module focuses on both custom and Report Wizard reports, deploying them and editing them in Report builder to see how they are designed.

Module 4:      Building a Custom Report with Report Builder

This module focuses on building a simple custom report using the Report Builder tool.

    Course Modules: Day 2 – Enhanced tools, building Custom Reports, Charts and Excel reports in Dynamics

    Module 5:      Understanding reporting & analytics in Dynamics 365

    The design behind Microsoft Dynamics’ reporting & analytics structure is reviewed and built upon with a detailed exercises that intend to show the common deployed report setups in Dynamics 365 and discuss how to write reports in these different environments.

    • Placing the infrastructure – Different Dynamics Deployments for Reports
    • Connection Strings and changes during deployment
    • Understanding the Configuration of your Report Server

    Module 6:      Reporting Using Excel and SQL Analysis Services

    Often Microsoft Excel covers the major requirements and complex calculations that users need on a relatively flat set of data. This module looks at the different data exporting approaches and how to use these for reporting on Dynamics data from both an ad-hoc and repeatable perspective. Further exercises show you how to leverage the analysis services of excel to virtually remove Dynamics from the equation and go straight to the data source for reporting and future maintenance.

    Module 7:      Editing and Deploying Reports created with Report Wizard

    Module 8: Editing Charts XML and Reports RDLs

    Often, certain environment criteria and deployment debugging/validation/automation can be done by editing the text in a report or chart. This module looks at the structure at a high-level to give students the lowest-level understanding of the reporting and charting framework used in Dynamics 365 and then builds on these concepts in detail working in Visual Studio.

    Day 3 – Advanced principles and tricks for queries, filtering and drill-downs on Reports in Dynamics 365

    Module 9:      Dynamics 365 System

    Querying data is always the first step in building an efficient and effective report. This modules introduces the mandatory concepts needed in writing a SQL query for reports run in Dynamics 365.

    • SQL Server Management Studio and basic query writing
    • Rule of using Filtered views and logging onto the SQL server as a valid Dynamics user
    • Build a report using the iTeach DB
    • Parameters
    • Filtering by parameters
    • Filtering Parameters by Parameters o System Values: Using the Current User Parameter

    Module 10:  A few Additional Principles

    The filter and drilldown options available in SSRS provide a rich set of options for Report designers to use in order to get information out of their data. This module focuses on the breadth of techniques to filter, drill down and expand/collapse controls on a report and uses exercises to reflect common uses of these features.

    Module 11:     Fetch XML

    Dynamics provides a set of additional options to a user in Report Builder outside of the Report Builder tool itself. This module focuses on the Dynamics specific options available to users regarding filtering and Dynamic SQL commands.

    • Write a report using Dynamic SQL

    Module 12:   Documents Templates

    Dynamics provides a wide range of applications for their reporting and analytical tools, this section focuses on the miscellaneous uses of the reporting tools available to users with a Microsoft Dynamics environment available to them.
